August 4, 2020 - Story about Evansville IN Vanderburh County Corruption We own a home in downtown Evansville, Indiana. We have owned and lived here since 2003. Golden Living-Brentwood owns the property directly behind us including the lot to our left. We have had continuous problems with GLB since we moved here which include throwing bio waste, cigarettes, trash, trespassing, and parking vehicles in our yard, residents and employees starting screaming disputes with us in which we had to call the city police to intervene. The vacant lot that GLB owns to the left of our property has always been allowed to grow up in weeds. This has caused vagrants to trespass and camp there. This presents a security and fire issue for us. We have called the police numerous times to report people there at night. The police refuse to patrol it because they say the weeds need to be cleared out. Years ago the weeds grew up over 10 feet high on GLB’s lot covering an area of the sidewalk. Approximately 5 years ago someone filed a complaint. The City of Evansville Building Commission’s office (Comm. Ron Bean) posted a notice in our front yard giving us 10 days to rectify the situation. I contacted the code office and discovered the debris and weeds they wanted cleared was actually the lot owned by GLB. Commissioner Bean and his assistant Crystal Harp came over and looked at the lot with debris and determined that it was not our property. They told us that they had originally contacted GLB who told them that the property with the debris belonged to us. Even after this there was no violation posted on GLB’s property. Since then every year the GLB lot is growing up with weeds. Last year I filed a complaint about the weeds with the Comm. Bean’s code office. Shorty after they posted a violation notice on my property. I emailed Crystal Harp and reminded her that the weeded lot belongs to GLB. In her responding email she stated that “I feel” that the lot is yours. I wrote back and asked for some plat, record, or proof that we are the owners. She did not respond, and I did not receive any other notices until last Friday, 07-31-20, when I found a posted notice on our front lawn that we have 10 days to clear the weeds. Since we have our lawn mowed every 2 weeks and the weeds on GLB’s green space and lot have again gotten very high the Building Comm weed code office is again threatening us with fines for property we do not, nor have ever, owned. It is interesting to note that the Building Commission’s office has never posted or fined GLB and continues to rely on GLB, instead of property plats and owner records, to determine who’s property to post notice and threaten with fines for the last 5 years.
